Challenge
The existing design system served as a solid foundation but hit its limits when scaling across dozens of government organizations, each with its own visual identity and specific needs.
My Role
I joined as an external designer with expertise in design systems, accessibility, and web design interaction patterns.
I worked alongside the internal design team to help identify opportunities to accelerate the system's evolution.
Result
New version 4.0 of design system with redefined design token architecture. Accessible DarkMode out of the box for each design. Layout structure for typical web pages — with automate responsive Figma behaviour.

More effective workflow in Figma

Challenge
The existing design system served as a solid foundation but hit its limits when scaling across dozens of government organizations, each with its own visual identity and specific needs.
Missing semantic token layer — colors were defined directly without semantic mapping, making dark mode and multi-branding impossible.
Non-responsive components — components weren't built for consistent responsive behavior across breakpoints.
No layout system — there was no tokenized approach to layouts and page templates for different content types.
Unclear roadmap plan — the team needed help mapping and prioritizing what to tackle and in what order.

Process
I started by analyzing the requirements and the current state of the design system to identify workflow bottlenecks. Then I ran interviews with designers actively using the system, asking each the same question: where do you see gaps and friction in your workflow today?
We brought the findings into a team workshop to identify, organize, and prioritize what we'd uncovered. To pressure-test our thinking, I demonstrated industry best practices — showing how mature design systems handle the same problems we were facing, especially around flexible theming token structure.

“ Working with Ladislav was consistently strong on a professional level. I especially appreciate his systematic approach to design and his ability to build long-term, scalable foundations.
His design token system architecture (automatic mobile–desktop swapping) significantly improved our workflow and continues to save us time across projects. ”
